The "IP" of IP address is an abbreviation for "Internet Protocol". The "protocol" refers to the rules that regulate computer networks connectivity. And the "address" part refers to a unique number that is associated with all of your online activity.
In other words, an Internet Protocol address is a litany of identifier separated by periods that is carried by every device in a network. This includes every computer, router, modem, printer, switch, and other device connected to an IP network.
There are generally two versions of IP addresses - Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) and Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6)
IP Version 4 is the first version and has a 32-bit number. IPv4 divided into classes varying from class A to class E.
IP Version 6 is a 128-bit IP address that was created to relieve the load on IPv4, which had become highly active and even flustered as a result of the internet's explosive growth.
IPv6 version has been implemented to meet the increased demand for Internet addresses. Its goal was to resolve things associated with IPv4. It has 340 undecillion unique address space with 128-bit address space.
There are two main types of IP addresses:
Public IP Address
The public IP address serves as a single primary address for all network devices connected to the network. Each device on the network is given a unique IP address. The Internet Service Provider (ISP) oversees the essay of the network device's public IP address (router). ISPs amass a large number of IP addresses, which they assign to their customers.
Public IP addresses are further classified into two types:
Dynamic IP Address - These are the IP addresses that are inconsistent and frequently changing. They are assigned by ISPs from their large pool of IP addresses based on the needs of the client. In this way, frequently changing IP addresses save ISPs money while also providing some protection from malicious hackers.
Static IP Address - Static IP addresses are consistent addresses, as opposed to dynamic IP addresses. The network device's IP address assigned to the system remains consistent. Companies and individuals avoid using static IP addresses due to the constant nature of the address. However, they are required if a company wishes to assign a host to its network server.
Private IP Address
A private IP address is a unique IP address assigned to each device that is connected to your internet network, which includes computers, tablets, and smartphones. It also definitely includes any Bluetooth devices you use, such as speakers or printers, smart devices such as TVs, and so on.
The number of private IP addresses is increasing everyday due to the growing industry of internet of things (IoT) products.
There are two types of website IP addresses:
Shared IP Address
Shared IP addresses basically used by small business websites that have a few visitors and do not have a large number of pages. The IP address is not unique and is shared by multiple websites. A shared IP address is enough for most users because common configurations don’t require a dedicated IP.
Dedicated IP Address
Dedicated IP addresses are assigned to every website individually. When you use dedicated IP addresses, you avoid the possibility of being backlisted by others on your server because of their bad behavior. A dedicated IP address is beneficial in numerous ways. When traffic is heavy, it increases speed while also increasing security. However, dedicated IP addresses are more expensive than shared IP addresses.
